Before the show, area residents can enjoy pre-theatre dinner specials at local independent restaurants
Ursinus College has again teamed up with The Collegeville Economic Development Corp. (CEDC) to feature the 1945 comedy “Dream Girl” in its first “Dinner & a Show” of 2015 with 15 local restaurants offering dinner specials to individuals who attend.
Performances for the wacky comedy “Dream Girl,” are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18, 19, 20 and 21. Tickets are only $5 general admission and $2 for students and senior citizens. Click here for Tickets
At both websites, Individuals will be issued a receipt which they should show at the restaurant on the day of the performance to get the dinner special. They will also need the receipt to give to the Ursinus Box Office in order to pay for and pick up their tickets. Theatergoers should arrive at the box office at least 15 minutes before the show begins.
Directed by Professor Domenick Scudera, the show features Georgina Allerton, a young woman whose head is filled with dreams – daydreams, that is. Stuck in a dead-end job and a failing relationship, Georgina allows her imagination to run Walter Mitty style, giving her dull life some fantastic, adventurous twists and turns. Written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Elmer Rice, this delightfully entertaining comedy was the hit of Broadway in 1945. Rarely produced today, Ursinus College revives this lost treasure to remind us all to dream big and be spontaneous.
In addition to running for a year on Broadway, a revived 1948 screen version of “Dream Girl” starred Betty Hutton, Macdonald Carey, Peggy Wood and Walter Abel. Then in 1955, this little-known but delightful play was made into a televised version presented in the Hallmark Hall of Fame series starring Vivian Blaine. Finally in 1965, “Dream Girl” was re-adapted for the Broadway musical stage under the title “Skyscraper.”
“Dinner & a Show” is a win-win-win for Ursinus College, our local restaurants, and Collegeville area residents,” said Cathy Kernen, CEDC President. “This promotion showcases the quality of the performing arts at the College, encourages residents to patronize our local independent restaurants instead of the big chains, and gives residents an opportunity to enjoy an inexpensive fun night on the town without the hassle of Center City traffic.”
The following restaurants are offering dinner specials to customers attending “Dream Girl.” It is highly recommended that theatergoers make reservations with them and arrive at the restaurant by 5:30 p.m. to enjoy a leisurely dinner and to allow enough time to get to the Ursinus campus.
The Lenfest Theater is located within the College’s Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Center. Those attending the play should park in the College’s West parking lot; enter from Ninth Ave. The Kaleidoscope Building which houses the Lenfest Theater is to the side of the parking lot.
